In a small secluded town by the sea, there live two lonely youths filled with angst and uncertainty.

To the 15-year-old Ah-Guei, her world has always been different from others. Her eyes tell her that there are no greens or reds in the world. The only person she looks up to is her cousin, Ah-Xian. Ah-Xian has a big world-map and a whole bookshelf of traveling guides. He takes Ah-Guei on imaginary journeys out of their little town, into a world full of wonders.

Yet, the 20-year-old Ah-Xian harbors a secret, as he has come to realize that the only objects of his desires have always been people of his own sex.

Ah-Guei and Ah-Xian dream and plan about that one day when they can fly away to a place where there will be no more loneliness or angst.

The boy dreams about going off to the Great New York with his beloved. And the girl she dreams about sailing to a little island in the Pacific. And on that island, no ones world would be shaded with green or red. Every one of them would be color-blinded, just like her.

Utopia is not far off the horizon, can their dreams really come true?

Q: Why do you choose this story as your very first movie?

A: About three years ago, I was reading a student’s screenwriting assignment. The story was about some daily routine life of a color blind girl. The storyline was very simple. However, somehow for some reason, I had a feeling that the story could further developed into a great movie right after I read it. Therefore, I began writing the script. I wanted to depict the inner thoughts and the view from the perspective of a color blind girl. I had a strong affection toward the script after I finished it. In addition, I received a grant from the Taiwanese government that designated for young movie directors. With my considerably attraction to the script and assistantship from the government, I decided to give myself a try to direct the move for the very first time in my life.

As a Taiwanese, I was born and raised in an island located at the edge of the world. Taiwan’s unique circumstances of politics and history remind me of the girl and boy who are eager to see for their self recognitions in the movie. They both have a sense of desolation as if they are completely isolated from the world.

Q: What is your major challenge during the process of filming your first movie?

A:The three actors and actresses in the movie were new to the screen. Before they joined us, they had zero experiences in performing. It took me a year to find the right person for the right characters and it took me another year to train them. I had to create any possible opportunities to make them get together. They had to be together to the point that they could interact with one another with a sense of intimacy and unfamiliarity.
